I drew this one sipping kombucha on a rainy day in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii. My husband and I had just found out we were finally pregnant with our first child, after trying for over a year — the timing couldn't have been better. A week into the trip, morning sickness and exhaustion set in, and I found the local kombucha settled my stomach while drawing settled my mind, same as it always does. This piece is about the connection between mountains and ocean. We've always called the mountains home, whether in Montana, Colorado, or the Appalachians near Asheville, but the sea pulls something different out of us — a little more buoyant, a little more carefree.
